There Merton's wife gives Wendahban the white man's name, Donald Norton after her father. Years go by and Donald Norton, now a man, is devoted to the Hudson Bay Trading Company and secretly in love with his foster sister, Janet Layard. But the stigma of being a half-breed stop him from professing his love and may soon cost him his position in the company. Can Donald Norton find a life amongst the whites or will Wendahban have to return to the wigwam in shame?
